Lessons in Leadership

From the Football Field to Business Success

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of leading high-performing teams across various sectors, including the Army, Air Force, federal government, and non-profits. However, one of the most humbling and rewarding leadership experiences came from an unexpected quarter – coaching youth tackle football for the New Albany Plain Local Schools.

Originally, I had planned to step back from coaching after my stint with t-ball and flag football. But when the opportunity to coach my son’s third and fourth-grade football team came up, I couldn’t resist, despite some initial reservations.

This coaching role arrived at a crucial juncture in my life, as I was grappling with finding a new purpose and identity after retiring as a senior Captain promotable in the Ohio Air National Guard. My passion has always been in team development and working towards a common goal. I collaborated with Joe, the head coach, and Brandon, another support coach, to build a cohesive unit.

My journey in this role was transformative. I deepened my understanding of football strategy, drawing parallels between it and broader leadership principles, thanks to insights from my high school head coach, Coach Penn. Our team’s success, culminating in a 6-2 season record, was gratifying, but the most memorable aspect was imparting to these young players the essence of a true team. I emphasized that a team is only as strong as its individual members who are committed to being their best.

As a support role coach, I thrived, ensuring the limelight was on those who needed it the most. My philosophy has always been to ask, “How can I help?” because I believe in the synergy of combining individual strengths for a collective goal. My current focus is on leveraging my ability to help others prosper financially, recognizing money as a powerful tool. My aim is to secure my family’s future and address causes close to our hearts.

As I approach Day 30 of my blogging journey, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share my story and start building a community of like-minded individuals. My mantra remains ‘Deeds. Not words,’ as I continue to strive for turning my annual income into monthly income, driven by the desire to help others and make a meaningful impact.
