Today marked a remarkable occasion: I had the honor of attending the retirement ceremony of a Master Sergeant E7 from the 179th AW in Mansfield, Ohio, whom I once led. This Airman’s journey with me began during my transition from an Army to Air Force Officer. Tasked with managing a troop facing performance challenges, I accepted the role, eager to support and guide him towards his expressed goal of retirement.

Our initial interaction set the tone. I provided counseling, established a strong support system, and designed a clear action plan to reignite his drive. Clarity in tasks, purpose, and expected outcomes was key, and I ensured he had access to all necessary resources. I approached his situation without preconceptions about his past performance, focusing instead on his potential.
