Mastering Self and Space for Success
The Art of Organizing Your Environment for Success
As the world shifted into the pandemic era, my life as a newlywed and business leader was thrown into a whirlwind of challenges. My ADHD symptoms were amplified, and
everything felt overwhelming. It was a time when balancing professional responsibilities with personal life became a daunting task.
Realizing the need for structure and support, I turned to several resources. I enlisted the help of an ADHD coach, engaged with a therapist for consistent support, and even worked with an organization specialist. On top of this, I completed a Get Things Done (GTD) course, which was a game-changer. Much of my understanding of systems and processes, I owe to my early days with Josh in G-3 Operations for the Ohio National Guard.
Over the years, my approach to staying organized has evolved, but the underlying principle remains constant: organization is key to being your best self. For me, staying organized is not just a preference; it’s a necessity, especially as a business owner and leader.
The ZEAL Productivity Model: A Tailored Approach
Adapting David Allen's GTD principles, I've developed the ZEAL Productivity Model (ZPM), a comprehensive organizational framework for leaders and high-performers, including those with ADHD. ZPM integrates digital and physical tools to create a structured yet adaptable method of managing tasks and projects.
Key Components of ZPM
Zero in (Capture): This step ensures that all tasks and ideas are collected, using a variety of tools to leave no stone unturned.
Evaluate (Clarify): Here, we prioritize tasks and set clear objectives, an essential step for those who benefit from manageable, defined action items.
Arrange (Organize): This is where we organize tasks in a way that suits personal and team productivity styles, adaptable to different work environments.
Lead & Learn (Reflect & Engage): This final step focuses on continuous improvement and leadership growth, crucial for high performers.
Benefits of ZPM for Leaders
Structured Flexibility: ZPM offers the needed structure to manage ADHD challenges, while allowing for personal working style adaptations.
Reduced Overwhelm: By breaking tasks into smaller steps, ZPM helps in managing the often overwhelming nature of leadership and business responsibilities.
Enhanced Focus: Regular review and organization within ZPM keep high-priority tasks in clear focus.
Clear Communication: ZPM enhances team communication, ensuring everyone is aligned and understands their roles and responsibilities.
Summary and Closing Thoughts
The ZEAL Productivity Model is more than just a set of organizational tools; it's a philosophy of leadership and personal management. It’s particularly effective for leaders and high-performers, including those navigating ADHD. ZPM stands as a testament to the idea that with the right systems in place, even the most dynamic and challenging environments can be navigated with ease and efficiency.
In closing, remember that organizing your environment, both mentally and physically, is not just about creating lists or sorting emails. It’s about creating a space where your leadership can flourish, where your team can thrive, and where your business can grow. With ZPM, you’re not just organizing tasks; you’re setting the stage for success in every aspect of your life.
